Japanese engineering firm IHI has joined a consortium of Australian and Japanese companies looking to produce and export green ammonia, with a final investment decision on the project expected in 2025.

Other members of the consortium are Japanese refiner Idemitsu's subsidiary Idemitsu Renewable Development, Australia's Queensland state government-owned energy firm CS Energy and Australian renewable power developer Energy Estate. The project is planned to be located in Abbot Point, north Queensland.

The project expects to produce and supply 500,000 t/yr of green ammonia after completing front-end engineering design by 2024, IHI said on 15 September, although it did not give a timeline for when commercial operations will start. The consortium was previously targeting to begin production by the second half of the 2020s.

Japan and South Korea are potential export destinations for green ammonia from the project, a IHI representative told Argus.

IHI is the newest member of the consortium after Idemitsu joined in November 2022 when a feasibility study began. The targeted production amount is unchanged but South Korea has been added as a potential export outlet.

The project was initiated by the Queensland state government with an investment of A$8.5mn ($5.5mn) to develop Abbot Point as a "hydrogen export super hub", according to Energy Estate's website. The consortium plans to desalinate seawater to generate hydrogen for ammonia production, while looking into construction of power plants and desalination facilities.

Japanese firms are stepping up investments to develop an ammonia supply chain to achieve the country's 2050 decarbonisation goal. Domestic power utilities have joined forces to build a supply chain for hydrogen and fuel ammonia, aiming to use the fuels at their thermal power plants. Other Japanese firms including IHI and petrochemical producer Mitsui Chemicals have plans to establish a supply chain for ammonia and hydrogen by 2030 in Osaka.
