Malaysia has imposed anti-dumping duties (ADDs) for five years on Japanese steel products following initial investigations launched in January this year.

Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said that it had made a final determination to apply ADDs on cold-rolled coil (CRC) of alloy, or non-alloy steel of a thickness between 0.2mm to 2.6mm and width between 700mm to 1,300mm.

This will not include tin mill black plate or CRC imported for the purpose of auto or electric and electronic end-use originating or exported from Japan.

A 9.03pc duty will be imposed on Nippon Steel but other manufacturers will be slapped with a 22.62pc duty. The ADDs took effect on 29 September and will be enforced for five years to 29 September 2028.

"The imposition of anti-dumping duties on exports of subject merchandise from Japan is expected to address the unfair trade practices," MITI said.

The investigation was initiated based on a petition filed by Malaysian producer Mycron Steel on behalf of the domestic industry.
