Chile’s sulphuric acid spot price reaches 13-month high

Sulphuric acid prices delivered to Chile have increased to the highest level since September last year following a spot deal confirmed for fourth-quarter arrival.

A deal at a low $150s/t cfr for a cargo arriving in December has become the latest benchmark in a market that has lacked liquidity. Argus last assessed Chile cfr sulphuric acid prices at a midpoint of $146.50/t cfr on 5 October, the highest level since 1 September 2022.

The price rise comes as market participants have kicked off negotiations for 2024 contract volumes, which started on 2 October at a key industry event in Washington DC.

Chilean buyers have been largely outside of the spot market following supply tightness from heavy buying by Moroccan phosphate producer OCP during mid-August to mid-September. OCP bought approximately 500,000-550,000 t of sulphuric acid from European and Chinese producers for arrival between September-December, removing available spot cargoes from the global market.

Chile has faced lower domestic production this year, tightening supplies and forcing buyers to enter the spot market as they stock up ahead of heavy swells that traditionally start from mid-December at Mejillones port.

Chile's annual contract negotiations are expected to last until around mid-November. It is yet to be seen if buyers will manage to negotiate a contractual price for next year below the current contract settlement of $145.50/t cfr for 2023.
