Japanese power utility Tohoku Electric Power is planning to decommission its ageing 600MW No.1 and No.2 gas-fired units at the Higashi-Niigata power complex by April 2029-March 2030 fiscal year.

Tohoku plans to close the ageing gas units by 2029-30 and build two new 650MW combined-cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) units instead. The new 650MW No.6 CCGT unit is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2030-31, followed by the 650MW No.7 CCGT unit will be brought on line in 2035-36, Tohoku said. The construction work will start in 2027-28.

Tohoku is currently operating No.1, No.2, No.3 and No.4 gas-fired power units, with a combined capacity of 4.16GW, at the Higashi-Niigata power complex. The 1.21GW No.3 and the 1.75GW No.4 units will continue to operate because both units have high heat efficiencies at 48pc and 55pc respectively.

Tohoku's LNG consumption totalled 1.87mn t in April-September, up by 18pc from a year earlier, according to the company's latest financial results.
