Tanker fire extinguished after missile strike

A fire on an oil products tanker in the Gulf of Aden has been extinguished and all crew are safe, according to its charterer Trafigura.

In the most damaging strike in two months of attacks in the region, the Marlin Luanda was struck by a missile and caught fire on 26 January. Yemen's Houthi militant group said it carried out the attack, the latest in its campaign against shipping that has disrupted movement of oil and other commodities in both directions through the Suez Canal.

Trafigura said the fire was put out by the crew with assistance from the navies of India, the US and France, and the tanker is heading towards a safe harbour. It has no other vessels transiting the area.

The Marlin Luanda is a Long Range 2 (LR2) product tanker that loaded a cargo of naphtha in the Mediterranean and was pointed toward southeast Asia, according to vessel tracking data. Its registered owner is Oceonix Services, which is listed with a UK address, according to a ship database run by the International Maritime Organization.

The Houthis have said they are targeting shipping with links to Israel, in response to Tel Aviv's military campaign in Gaza, as well as vessels with UK or US connections since those countries carried out air strikes in Houthi-controlled territory earlier in January. The destroyer USS Carney came under attack on 26 January.

A number of tanker operators have suspended shipments through the Red Sea this month, choosing instead to move in both directions around the Cape of Good Hope. This longer, more expensive journey is stretching supply chains, tightening markets for diesel in Europe and naphtha in Asia-Pacific, and discouraging long-haul shipments of many crude grades.
