ASI urges Australia to ban unprocessed Fe scrap exports

Australia should restrict exports of unprocessed ferrous scrap to secure domestic supply and improve its circular economy, the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has urged the federal government.

In a submission to a senate inquiry on waste reduction and recycling policies, the ASI said scrap is becoming an increasingly scarce and valuable resource.

"Without a ban, Australian steel mills will fall short of being able to fully service the growing Australian construction and manufacturing sectors," said the group, which represents Australia's steel supply chain from mill to construction.

"Australia would be forced to continue to import higher volumes of steel scrap, adding to emissions through the transport process and damaging the local industry whilst potentially making it uneconomic."

Unprocessed steel scrap includes car parts and white goods contaminated with plastics and other products already banned from export, the ASI added.

The report for the Australian Senate's inquiry is due by 22 November after submissions recently closed.

Australia is a net exporter of ferrous scrap with most of its flows heading to south and southeast Asia.

In 2023, the country shipped 1.85mn t of scrap, with over 500,000t going to Bangladesh, 380,000t to India and 270,000t to Vietnam, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Australia has been increasing its scrap exports recently, with outflows jumping 70pc to 315,000t in the first two months of the year.
