EU flat steel demand to rise in February: Assofermet

European flat steel demand could rise in February as a result of buyers attempting to build stocks to protect themselves from further price increases, Italian steel and scrap association Assofermet said in its monthly note.

One of the key elements that is pushing flat steel offers across the continent upwards is the protectionist policies supported by European steel association Eurofer, Assofermet added.

Argus' daily Italian HRC index rose by €26/t to €592.75/t over 1-30 January.

Eurofer has been a key supporter of more stringent regulation on imports and finds itself in disagreement with its Italian counterpart on what direction the EU should take to regulate steel arrivals.

Looking back at the first month of 2025, Assofermet observed a slight improvement in flat steel order books for service centres, signalling that end-user demand is marginally better. Despite this, overall, service centres still recorded poor results in terms of volumes sold and profitability in January.

From inventories, long steel products recorded the sharpest declines in sale volumes, while flats showed a more significant price reduction over the past 12 months.

Potential trade wars and upcoming political elections in Europe were sources of uncertainty for the steel industry, Assofermet said.

"A new European political structure is emerging, with leadership increasingly oriented towards populism and nationalism, dynamics that could severely penalise economies dependent on exports, like the Italian one," Assofermet concluded.
