Spain's Enagas to offer bio-LNG terminal services

Spanish grid operator Enagas will start to offer bio-LNG terminal services for bunkering and truck loading in Barcelona and Huelva from March, the firm announced today.

The bio-LNG is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) of the EU and European Commission. This will reduce fees due under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU regulations.

The EU began including maritime shipping in the ETS last year, with shippers required to pay for 40pc of their emissions. This has increased to 70pc this year, and will rise to 100pc from 2026.

LNG bunker fuel is less emissions-intensive than conventional marine gasoil, so some firms are still choosing to run dual-fuel vessels on LNG, despite relatively high LNG bunker prices at present.

The bio-LNG bunker fuel is sourced from the interconnected gas grid, into which certified biomethane is injected, Enagas said. This mass-balance system is similar to that used at terminals including Belgium's Zeebrugge, which offers a virtual liquefaction service for a €2.05/MWh fee. The mass-balance fee at Enagas terminals is lower, at €0.54/MWh, market participants said.

Enagas provided 3.8TWh of LNG bunkering fuel in 2024, up by 140pc from 2023.
