Metals service center Olympic Steel sold a smaller volume of carbon flat steel and specialty metals flat products in 2024 than the prior year.
Olympic sold 839,699 short tons (st) of carbon flat steel products in 2024, a 1.7pc drop from 854,192st in 2023.
Specialty metals flat sales totaled 117,508st in 2024, a 1.7pc gain from the 115,587st sold the prior year. The company did not disclose sales tonnages for tubular and pipe products, but it did record a $336mn profit from the segment, a 9.1pc drop from $369mn the year before.
Since US president Donald Trump announced tariffs on steel and aluminum, lead times have about doubled for most products. Hot-rolled products extended lead times from three to four weeks out to six to eight weeks while cold-rolled and coated products now require eight to 10 weeks of lead time because of the rush of orders made following the tariff announcements.
Olympic expects its new cut-to-length line at its Minneapolis, Minnesota, facility, high speed specialty metal slitter outside Gary, Indiana, and white metals cut-to-length line in Schaumburg, Illinois, to be completed by the end of the first half of 2026.
Olympic earned a full-year 2024 profit of $23mn, down from $44.5mn in 2023.
