Minnesota-based base metals miner Talon Metals said it will acquire Westmoreland Mining's 256-acre former coal mine site in North Dakota to build its Beulah Minerals Processing Facility (BMPF), a nickel-copper processing facility.

The company aims to receive the necessary permitting for BMPF by the end of 2026 and to start construction in 2027.

In 2023, the Department of Energy awarded Talon a $114.8mn grant for the company to build its processing facility.

The company plans to send nickel and copper ore from its proposed Tamarack nickel-copper-cobalt joint venture with Rio Tinto in Minnesota to BMPF.

The property's title will be transferred to Talon in exchange for 15mn options to purchase shares of Talon and future ore delivery payments. Talon will pay Westmoreland $0.50/metric tonne of ore delivered to BMPF. The purchase price is capped at $10mn.
