French aluminum producer Constellium has successfully recycled and remelted aluminum scrap from end-of-life commercial jets for use in new aerospace applications, furthering its goal to support a circular economy in the aviation industry.

Next steps involve scaling operations and improving throughput rates, the company said on Thursday. Constellium partnered with aircraft dismantler Tarmac Aerosave — formed by Airbus, Safran and others — on the lab-scale project.

Constellium produced 2024 aluminum alloy in the trial run, saying the material "meets the stringent performance requirements" for new plane manufacturing. The company plans on targeting other alloys, helping to reduce the industry's reliance on emissions-intensive primary aluminum.

Aircraft components made from 2024 aluminum include fuselage skins, wing structures and engine nacelle coverings. The alloy, on average, is comprised of 4.4pc copper, 1.5pc magnesium and 0.6 manganese with the balance being aluminum.

Producers of the base metal have faced past challenges attempting to recycle scrap made from aerospace-grade alloys, primarily because of coatings and leftover attachments that affected chemistries during the remelt process — issues that Constellium touts its process fixes.
