Ford stops factories on tight rare earths supply

Ford Motor said it has shutdown operations at some US factories because of a shortage of rare earth magnets, which have been at the center of US-China trade talks.

"We had to shut down factories, it's hand-to-mouth right now," chief executive Jim Farley said in a televised interview on 13 June. He did not specify which sites were shut down.

Ford has not yet responded to a request for comment.

China's commerce ministry said on 8 June that it would resume granting export permits for restricted rare earths, while on 11 June US president Donald Trump claimed China agreed to a tentative deal to resume supply.

Ford has applications to the commerce ministry for exports which are getting approved one at a time, Farley said in the interview.

Without reliable access to rare earth elements and magnets, automotive suppliers cannot produce critical components such as transmissions, throttle bodies, alternators, motors, sensors, seat belts, speakers, lighting systems, power steering and cameras.

"They are all over in our F150, for example," Farley said, referring to the popular pickup truck model. "We are educating the administration, we are educating the Chinese leadership about how important these jobs in the Midwest are."
