New Zealand has released a draft plan to double its geothermal energy use by 2040 to support the country's increasing electricity and heating demand.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's (MBIE) From the Ground Up strategy outlines the country's intentions to increase geothermal electricity generation. The country's geothermal electricity generation in 2024 came in at 8,741GWh. This made up about 20pc of the country's energy mix.

The government allocated up to NZ$60mn ($35.8mn) of public infrastructure funding to geothermal energy production research to drill geothermal wells up to 6km deep and offset the high upfront costs for exploration. The plan's first drilling programme is expected to begin before the end of 2026.

New Zealand's electricity demand is projected to grow by 68pc over the next 25 years from 2024's 43,996GWh, according to the report. But the country is dealing with the possibility of a gas shortage because of falling gas reserves.

The government said it may consider an LNG import facility and overturn the ban on new oil and gas exploration to ease this shortage.

Renewables made up 85.5pc of New Zealand's electricity generation mix in 2024, data from the MBIE show.

Feedback submissions for the draft can be submitted until 12 September.
