South Korea's domestic sales of "eco-friendly" vehicles in July hit the highest monthly figure since the start of 2025, with the share of eco-friendly vehicle sales making up the majority of car sales during the month.

Eco-friendly vehicles made up around 55pc of the country's total domestic car sales during the month — its largest share of monthly domestic car sales so far this year. This indicates a shift in preferences away from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, according to the country's trade and industry ministry (Motie). Eco-friendly vehicles in South Korea refer to hybrids, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids and hydrogen-fuelled vehicles.

Eco-friendly vehicle domestic sales in July came in at around 76,600 units, up by almost 52pc on the year and 5.4pc on the month, again overtaking ICE vehicle domestic sales since May and in spite of lower month-on-month domestic car sales.

BEV sales were up by nearly 69pc on the year and 26pc on the month to almost 25,600 units. Hybrid EV sales rose by 43pc on the year, but fell by 4.7pc on the month.

South Korea's total domestic car sales during July came in at around 138,500 units. This was down by 5pc on the month, but up by 4.6pc on the year.

The country exported 68,100 units of eco-friendly vehicles in July, up by about 17pc on the year. But this was down by 11pc on the month, breaking the trend of continuous export growth since March.

Hybrid EV exports came in at 43,700 units, up by 18pc on the year but down by 11pc on the month. Meanwhile, South Korea exported slightly more than 20,200 units of BEVs, up by 12pc on the year but down by 9.5pc on the month.

South Korea's July auto output totalled around 316,300 units, which was up by 8.7pc on the year but down by almost 11pc on the month.

South Korea's total car exports fell by 13pc on the month to 211,900 units because of lower imports by the US. But South Korea's total car exports was up by 5.8pc on the year.

The US and South Korea reached a trade deal on 31 July, under which the US will lower its tariff rate on South Korea to 15pc in exchange for South Korean investment.
