Global surplus of refined copper supply shrank sharply in January-July to 101,000t, down from 401,000t over the same period in 2024, according to the International Copper Study Group (ICSG).

Both mined and refined copper output growth lagged, but refined copper consumption rose, with demand led by China.

Global copper mine production rose by 3.4pc on the year to 13.48mn t as new projects ramped up to capacity, alongside improved production at a number of operating mines, the ICSG said.

Production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) grew by about 12pc, supported by expansions at the Kamoa mine and the Tenke Fungurume and Ksanfu copper-cobalt mines. Output in Chile rose by 2.3pc, driven by higher production at the Escondida, Centinela, Mantos Copper and Codelco mines that offset reductions at Collahuasi and other smaller mines. Mongolian copper concentrate production grew by 34pc as the Oyu Tolgoy UG project ramped up.

Output fell in Indonesia by 32pc, due to lower output at Grasberg, where mining group PT Freeport Indonesia has since declared force majeure.

Global refined copper output grew by 3.9pc in January-July to 16.6mn t. Production in China and the DRC, which accounts for a combined 57pc of global output, increased by 7.5pc and 9.5pc, respectively. Excluding these countries, global output rose by only 0.5pc, owing to a 3.4pc decline in Asia (excluding China) and a 8.6pc decline in Chile.

Refined copper output increased by 25pc in India on higher operating capacity rates.

Global refined copper consumption grew by 5.9pc to 16.46mn t in January-July. Chinese apparent demand grew by 8.9pc, while usage outside of China rose by 2pc as growth in a number of Asian and Middle East and north Africa countries offset weak demand in the EU, Japan and US, according to the ICSG.
