US continues to 'hit hard' on Venezuela: Trump

  • Spanish Market: Crude oil

The US is engaging targets inside Venezuela, President Donald Trump has said, although neither the White House separately nor Venezuela have confirmed on-land attacks.

The US since September has attacked or destroyed 27 ships it alleged were carrying drugs from Venezuela, killing about 100. It has seized two oil tankers carrying sanctioned Venezuelan crude and is pursuing a third. But these attacks have taken place in international waters, although Trump in recent weeks threatened that strikes within Venezuelan territory could begin "soon".

Trump said such an attack has happened in a radio interview with host John Catsimatidis, released on 26 December.

"I don't know if you read, or you saw, they [drug cartels inside Venezuela] had a big plant, a big facility where [the] ships come from," Trump said. "Two nights ago we knocked that out, so, we hit them very hard."

Trump reiterated on Monday that the US had caused a "major explosion in the dock area" where boats were loaded with drugs.

According to Trump's timeline, the attack would have taken place on 24 or 25 December, near the time the US attacked militants in northern Nigeria.

Neither the Venezuelan government nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.

Maduro did not mention a specific attack in a speech he gave on 28 December — a Christian holiday that commemorates the Biblical execution of male infants — but he compared Trump with King Herod, who ordered their slaughter.

Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro had released 72 political prisoners around the Christmas holiday, non-governmental organizations said. Political persecution is one of the US' complaints about Maduro, including election stealing, drug trafficking and human rights abuses. Venezuela's leader have previously accused Trump of going after Venezuela's oil production, which has reached about 1mn b/d.

About 103,000 b/d of that has headed to the US so far in December, as Chevron operates in Venezuela under a sanctions waiver.

Drug shipments from Venezuela are down by 97pc, Trump said also during last week's interview.

Catsimatidis is chief executive of United Refining, part of his Red Apple holding group. It produces about 70,000 b/d of oil products mostly serving Pennsylvania and parts of New York and Ohio, according to the company.
