US Oct ferrous scrap exports plummet

The US exported less ferrous scrap in October than it had for nine years as domestic scrap prices outcompeted the seaborne market.

  • US scrap exporters shipped 725,000 metric tonnes (t) of ferrous scrap abroad in October 2025, the lowest sum since 2016, according to the latest US customs data aggregated by Global Trade Tracker.
  • October's total represents a 35pc decline in scrap exports compared to October 2024 as scrap dealers continued to prefer selling to US steel mills that pay higher prices for scrap than buyers abroad.
  • Bulk shipments to Turkey, the top international buyer of US scrap, fell by 48pc to 205,000t in October from a year earlier as demand among mills in that country hit a low point before picking back up in late 2025.
  • US bulk cargoes of scrap shipped to Bangladesh plummeted to 32,000t in October, down from 134,719t a year prior and the lowest volume since January 2024, as that south Asian country largely withdrew from the bulk market in the fourth quarter.
  • US containerized ferrous scrap exports rose by 7pc in October from the prior year, led by robust volumes from the US west coast to Asia.
  • Containerized ferrous scrap exports to Thailand reached 81,000t in October, up by 53pc from the same month a year earlier and making Thailand the top recipient of US containerized scrap for the first time in 2025.
  • Containerized exports to Taiwan, traditionally the top buyer of containerized cargoes from the US west coast, were steady at 74,000t of ferrous scrap in October compared with a year prior.
  • Shipments of containerized scrap to Vietnam rose by 17pc to 44,000t as that country continued buying steadily from California.
  • US scrap exports to Mexico fell to 99,000t in October 2025, down by 45pc from the previous October, contributing to a 14pc decline in total US overland scrap exports.
