Japan's scrap export tender continues to rise

Japanese scrap dealer co-operative Kanto Tetsugen's February export tender increased sharply, supported by active buying from a Bangladeshi mill.

A total of 20,000t of H2 scrap was awarded at ¥48,083/t ($309.21/t) free alongside ship (fas) today, up by ¥1,312/t from January and marking the highest level since August 2024. The tender price is equivalent to ¥49,083/t on a fob basis.

The cargo is scheduled for shipment to Bangladesh in March, with a Bangladeshi mill securing the Kanto tender cargo for the second consecutive month. The equivalent cfr price is estimated at around $365/t cfr, significantly above market expectations, given that Bangladeshi mills' target price for deep-sea bulk scrap was around only $355/t cfr last week.

Overseas buyers largely reacted cautiously to the higher tender result, with many indicating that they would be unable to follow if Japanese exporters raised offers to similar levels.

"We will have new year holiday next week, so it is better to wait and see until we return," a Vietnamese buyer said.

Vietnamese and Taiwanese buyers were active in the seaborne market in the previous week, with tradeable levels for H2 scrap at around $292-294/t fob, which was $10-15/t below the latest tender price, even after excluding the quality premium associated with tender cargoes.

The Argus daily assessment for H2 scrap fob Japan stood at ¥46,000/t on 9 February, compared with a January monthly average of ¥45,186/t fob. Tokyo Steel kept its domestic scrap prices unchanged on the day.
