Natural gas infrastructure company Williams will build a new power project to help meet the demands of data centers in Ohio, increasing its total investment in power projects to about $7.3bn.

Williams will develop the new project, known as Socrates the Younger. The company will be providing gas supplies as well as the needed pipeline infrastructure, compression and 340 MW of power generation under a 10-year agreement. The project is scheduled to start service in the second half of 2028.

Socrates the Younger is a part of Williams' growing portfolio of power generation projects. The company in the past year has announced three other projects: Aquila, Apollo and Socrates. The terms of the agreements for the Aquila plant in Utah and the Apollo plant in Ohio have been extended since they were initially announced.

The Aquila plant will provide 520MW under a 12.5-year agreement, up from a 10-year agreement and 369MW, Williams said on Tuesday. The Apollo plant, which would provide 490MW under a 10-year agreement, was also extended to 12.5 years.

The agreements demonstrate that customers "are locking in power well into the next decade," Rob Wingo, executive vice president of corporate strategic development, said.

Williams sees power generation as a key driver of gas demand growth through 2025. The company projects that gas demand in the power sector will rise by 10 Bcf/d (283mn m³/d) through 2035, two-thirds of which will come from data centers.
