Dimeca to commission central Mexico shredder

Mexican recycler Dimeca will commission a new auto shredder in central Mexico within the next year.

The 10,000 t/month shredder is Dimeca's second in two years, after it installed a 70 t/hr shredder in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, last summer. This newest installation is expected to be completed within the next year, a record speed, chief executive Ricardo de la Peña told Argus.

The new facility will be somewhere in central Mexico, but the location is yet to be decided.

The announcement comes amid a tight ferrous scrap supply market in Mexico — especially of shredded scrap as the count of shredders in the whole country hovers around a dozen, source have told Argus.

Monterrey/Saltillo ferrous scrap prices rose by an average of Ps1,100/t in January on renewed mill demand as they work to build inventory.

"We are really trying to stay one step ahead not only of the competition, but we also see a very strong demand coming for these materials in the next few months," de la Peña said.

Dimeca recently opened scrap yards in Leon, Guanajuato and Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, with two more expected to open in the next month.
