Japanese renewable energy developer Renova's electricity sales rose in January from a year earlier, according to data released by the company today.

Renova sold approximately 290GWh of renewable electricity in January, including solar, biomass, and geothermal, higher by 18pc from the same month in 2025. Sales of electricity generated by biomass-fired power plants were around 267GWh out of the total in January.

Renova is operating seven biomass-fired power plants in Japan, and the combined capacity was 445MW in the end of January, along with 374MW of solar and 2MW of geothermal.

The company sells electricity from the 75MW Sendai Gamo, the 75MW Tokushima Tsuda, the 75MW Omaezaki Kou, and the 75MW Kanda plants under the feed in tariff (FiT) scheme. Electricity generated by the 21MW Akita, the 75MW Ishinomaki Hibarino, and the 50MW Karatsu plants is sold under the feed in premium (FiP) scheme, based on power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Renova's whole consumption of biomass fuels, including imported wood pellets, imported palm kernel shells (PKS), and domestic wood chips, would reach 2mn t in Japan's 2025-26 fiscal year, which runs over April 2025-March 2026, according to the company.

Renova is currently accelerating in-house procurements of biomass fuels, which started in April 2025, with an aim to secure high-quality fuels. The company concluded around 10 spot deals in 2025.
