The closure this weekend of the Shuaiba port in Kuwait following US and Israeli military strikes on Iran could disrupt some petrochemical trade flows.

Operations at the port were suspended on Saturday as a precaution after debris from an unidentified aerial object fell nearby. The port is a regional hub for petrochemical exports, with Equate Petrochemical operating a large plant adjacent to the port.

The Equate Shuaiba plant has 1.9mn metric tonnes (t)/yr of ethylene capacity, 1.1mn t/y of ethylene oxide capacity and 990,000 t/y of polyethylene capacity, according to Argus data. The plant also can produce 1mn t/y of xylenes, 830,000 t/y of paraxylene, 490,000 t/y of ethylbenzene, 450,000 t/y of styrene and 443,000 t/y of benzene, according to Argus data.

The products most likely to be curtailed by the port closure would be polymers and paraxylene, based on historic trade flows.

Other ports in the region, including in Oman and UAE, also have been struck during the conflict.

In UAE, debris from an aerial interception sparked a fire at one of the berths at the port of Jabel Ali, a major polymer export hub. Oman's Duqm port was hit by two drones, injuring one worker, state-owned news agency Ona said Sunday.

All petrochemical exports from the region could be disrupted after initial reports that the strait of Hormuz has been closed. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency on Saturday said broadcasts or statements indicating closure are not legally binding and it advised vessels to transit with caution.
