European longs mills withdraw offers

Some European electric arc furnace-based long steel producers withdrew their offers on Tuesday, after the prospect of significant and prolonged disruption to Mideast Gulf gas supplies drove significant increases in European gas and power prices.

At least five Italian rebar producers, one of which also produces wire rod, stopped offering on Tuesday, following a flurry of requests in the morning as buyers anticipated significant cost-driven price hikes. Mills signalled they will return with revised offers within 48-72 hours.

The Italian April power contract was up by €22.80/MWh on Monday and €16.70/MWh on Tuesday, while the Spanish equivalent rose by €10.10/MWh from Monday, with global energy and fuel prices likely to be pushed higher as a result of the US-Iran conflict.

One mill source suggested that new offers could be at least €10/t higher, and that prices are likely to increase much more in the near future.

A Spanish producer of rebar, wire rod and sections also indicated that it withdrew offers on Tuesday after a hike of at least €20/t on wire rod in the past few days.

A global steelmaker with plants in several European countries was heard to be informally off the market for sections, a German source said, while another source suggested the mill had also halted its wire rod offers in Spain.
