Singapore, 12 April (Argus) — China continues to lead Asia's aviation market with 38pc of passengers in the region beginning or ending their journey in the country, a figure predicted to grow to 45pc by 2013.

“China is a big market and getting bigger,” the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) director-general Giovanni Bisignani said with the opening of a new North Asia Regional Office in Beijing. “IATA is here to support the growth and to ensure that the industry gets stronger.”

China growing aviation market is supporting jet fuel demand, with the country's aircraft fleet increasing from 480 to 1,400 within a decade, a domestic market that has grown 3½ times in the same period from 1.6mn seats to 5.7mn seats a week and its international seats growing from 500,000 weekly seats to 1.4mn.

Beijing has become the world's third busiest measured by passenger traffic, according to the Airports Council International, helping drive demand in the wider region. Asia-Pacific overtook North America last year as the largest aviation market, IATA said. Airline passengers in 2009 totalled 647mn, compared with the 638mn that travelled within North America.

Chinese airlines recorded double-digit growth through last year final quarter, in some cases as high as 16pc domestically, 10pc internationally and 23pc regionally to the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macau.
