Singapore, 29 June (Argus) — Singapore's Changi airport recorded in May its highest monthly growth in passenger traffic against a year earlier. This is a continuing sign that the Asia-Pacific aviation sector, and accordingly jet fuel demand, is recovering from last year's downturn.

The airport recorded 3.39mn passenger movements in May, a 21.6pc increase against the same period last year. Passenger movements in the first five months of the year totalled 16.6mn, a 16.7pc increase over 2009 and a 7.1pc increase against 2008, prior to the start of the global financial crisis.

The increase in Changi's passenger traffic was partly driven by a public holiday and the start of school holidays, the airport said. Singapore Tourism Board data showed that tourist arrivals in May surged by 30.3pc from a year ago to a monthly record-high of 946,000.

Passenger traffic to and from North America surged the most of all regions at 43pc from a year earlier, Changi airport said. Northeast Asia registered a 34pc growth over the same period, while southeast and south Asia grew by more than 20pc. Full service carriers accounted for 60pc of the increase in passenger traffic, indicating that budget airlines might have lost some of its appeal amid recovering economic conditions.

Cargo movements through Changi in May were at 153,098t, an increase of 14.7pc from a year earlier. Aircraft movements rose 12.4pc during the same period to 22,151.

Cargo throughput at Hong Kong's international airport had also reached a record high in May, reinforcing hopes of a sustained economic recovery that authorities said will likely continue in the coming months.

Asia's resurgent aviation industry is stimulating jet fuel demand in the region, helping push the jet fuel crack spread against crude earlier this month to its highest level since February 2009.
