Houston, 9 November (Argus) — LSB Industries, parent company of El Dorado Chemical, said its sulfuric acid plant in El Dorado, Arkansas, will resume operations before the end of the year.
The sulfur-based sulfuric acid plant, with a capacity of 115,000st/yr (104,327t/yr), was damaged in an explosion at the site in May. The plant's restart could be as early as later this month, company executives said during a conference call to discuss earnings.
As a result of the downtime, El Dorado purchased spot sulfuric acid in the merchant market to cover its contractual commitments. The purchase and resale of the spot volume resulted in a negative profit margin, the company said. LSB estimates the combined impact to profits resulting from lost sales, lost profits and extra expenses for the third quarter was at least $9mn.
LSB earned a $6.7mn profit during the period, up from $6.3mn in the third quarter 2011, attributable to more positive results for its other operating sectors.
