Sao Paulo, 25 June (Argus) — Amyris, a US-based renewable fuels and chemicals company, and its partner Total expect to secure approval for commercial sales of bio-jet fuel as early as 2014.

Amyris and Total recently concluded a successful test flight on an Airbus A321 jet in France between Toulouse and Paris, which used a renewable jet fuel blend using sugarcane as a feedstock.

The fuel needs to be approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) before it can be sold commercially. Amyris and Total expect this could happen as early as next year.

Bio-jet fuels are seen as an import tool for reducing emissions from air travel. The global aviation industry has a target of reducing net CO2 emissions by 50pc by 2050 compared to a 2005 benchmark, and to cap net aviation CO2 emissions after 2020, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
