Chevron Phillips Chemical recently began the process of restarting its 1.78bn lb/yr Port Arthur, Texas ethylene cracker, the company confirmed today.

The company expects the plant to ramp up to full capacity by the end of the year. The Port Arthur plant was shut down and two employees were injured following a fire on 7 July. Following the incident, spot ethylene at Mont Belvieu, Texas surged from 57¢/lb to 70.5¢/lb by 14 July.

The outage at Port Arthur, other maintenance, and the delayed restart of the Geismar, Louisiana cracker all contributed to steady gains in spot ethylene prices during the third quarter, when it peaked at 76.3125¢/lb 19 September.

Spot ethylene weakened in October and early November, hitting a low of 49¢/lb 6 November.
