Pilbara Port Authority freezes handling fees

Australia's Pilbara Port Authority will keep shipping handling fees at current levels until at least 1 July next year because of challenging iron ore market conditions.

The port authority looks after Port Hedland, the country's largest iron ore export port, and Dampier that exports iron ore for UK-Australian mining firm Rio Tinto. It was formed in July through the merger of the Port Hedland and Dampier port authorities. UK-Australian mining firm BHP Billiton and Australian producers Fortescue Metals and Atlas Iron ship iron ore through Port Hedland.

Shipments through Dampier have slowed this year from a peak of 13.64mn t in August to 11.62mn t in November. Dampier handled 146.2mn t of iron ore in the 12 months ending June 2014, down from 148.4mn t of iron ore the previous year.

Shipments also fell from Port Hedland in November, down by 8.5pc on October to 29.03mn t. Port Hedland shipped 376.62mn t of iron ore in the 11 months to the end of November, up by 31pc from 288.53mn t for the same period a year earlier. This sharp increase has contributed to the large slump in iron ore prices. The Argus ICX, the price for 62pc Fe Chinese imports, was assessed at $67.35/t at the end of last week against $132.70/t at the start of this year.
