Global fertilizer giant Yara and German industrial chemicals producer BASF are moving forward on building a world-scale $600mn ammonia unit at BASF's Freeport, Texas, facility.
The 750,000 t/yr ammonia facility, for which preliminary discussions began in late 2013, will be 68pc owned by Yara and 32pc by BASF. The partners will have offtake volumes aligned with ownership percentages. Yara will manage the unit's construction and will build an ammonia tank on site. BASF will operate the plant and export terminal while upgrading its current terminal and pipeline facilities.
The US has seen numerous nitrogen projects announced and evaluated by majors like CF Industries and OCI as well as smaller investors. Since the shale gas boom, investors have sought to capitalize on attractive nitrogen production economics given the low price of natural gas feedstock. Greenfield projects cost well in excess of $1bn, putting the Yara-BASF unit at a much lower capital expenditure through the construction phase.
But the Yara-BASF project is unique in that it will use hydrogen as its feedstock, a method which is meant to reduce costs and decrease carbon dioxide emissions. A long-term hydrogen supply arrangement has been signed with Praxair, the largest industrial gases company in North America.
The ammonia plant provides a new low-cost supply option for Yara, which is a leader in global ammonia trade. BASF benefits reducing its dependence on imports, usually supply ex-Trinidad, in favor of lower-cost, nearby ammonia supply it will use captively at its Freeport hub.
"[BASF] will thus strengthen our Freeport Verbund and the competitiveness of our polyamide 6 value chain in the region," said Wayne Smith, head of BASF's chemicals segment.
In 2014, the US received just over 4mn t of waterborne ammonia shipments. Nearly 471,000t were shipped to the Freeport port while Texas ports combined accounted for around 1.3mn t, or more than 30pc of total offshore imports.
KBR received the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the plant which is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
