Chinese new energy development firm Shanghai Electric Gotion (SEG) has reached full capacity in the first phase of its battery production base in Nantong city, southeast China's Jiangsu province.

The first phase, with investment of 1.5bn yuan ($223mn), has a capacity of 5 GWh/yr of batteries. The entire project has capacity of 10 GWh/yr. Construction plans for the remaining 5 GWh/yr were undisclosed.

The Nantong base integrates research and development, testing, and manufacturing of energy storage power stations, backup power supplies, and new energy vehicle (NEV) power batteries. Energy storage and power backup are SEG's main focuses, supplemented by power batteries.

The rapid development of the NEV market and 5G telecom networks are expected to promote the energy storage, backup power and power battery sectors. China has built more than 500,000 5G base stations, with over 100mn 5G terminal connections, according to the Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Xiao Yaqing.

Chinese output of NEVs in August also increased from a year earlier, driven by stimulus packages offered by the central and local governments to boost vehicle sales, including a campaign promoting the use of NEVs in rural areas.

SEG was established by energy development firm Shanghai Electric and battery manufacturer Gotion in December 2017. It also has a 300 MWh/yr power battery cell production base in Kunshan city, Jiangsu province.

Gotion, one of China's major power battery producers, in June announced that it will raise funds to develop NEV power battery production projects in Hefei city in south China's Anhui province.
