Dakota Gasification Company
The Great Plains Synfuels plant, owned and operated by Dakota Gasification Company (a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric Power Cooperative), is the only commercial-scale coal gasification facility in the U.S. designed to convert lignite coal into synthetic natural gas and a slate of fertilizer and nitrogen-based products such as ammonia, urea, ammonium sulfate, and diesel exhaust fluid. Located near Beulah, North Dakota, the plant began operating in 1984 and was acquired by Dakota Gas in 1988. Since then, more than $1.3 billion has been invested to improve efficiency, meet environmental standards, and diversify its product slate. The Synfuels Plant captures more CO2 from coal conversion than any facility in the world and is a participant in one of the world's largest carbon sequestration projects. Today, the plant produces 13 products, with nearly 70% of its revenue coming from sources beyond natural gas.
