Qantas, Airbus to invest in Australian SAF projects

Australia's Qantas Airways and European aircraft manufacturer Airbus will jointly invest up to $200mn in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and feedstock projects in Australia through the Australian Sustainable Aviation Fuel Partnership.

Projects must be commercially viable and meet strict environmental sustainability criteria to be considered to receive funding under the initiative, the companies said. The partners have initially committed to the agreement for five years, with an option to extend later. Qantas' financial contribution includes A$50mn ($34.8mn) already committed in November 2019 to fund Australian SAF research and development over 10 years.

Qantas has set a target to use 10pc of SAF in its overall fuel mix by 2030, and has signed SAF supply deals with BP for its flights out of London from this year and Aemetis for flights out of US Californian airports from 2025. But it does not yet have plans for using SAF on any of its flights out of Australia because of the lack of a domestic commercial-scale SAF industry.

"This investment will help kick-start a local biofuels industry in Australia and hopefully encourage additional investment from governments and other business", Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said.
