Power costs, spot price drop in Brazil

Brazil's power clearing price (PLD) and marginal cost of power generation for all sources decreased this week, according to data from power clearing house CCEE and grid operator ONS, in a downward trend boosted by unseasonal rainfall.

The marginal cost of power generation reached R70.65/MWh ($13.85/MWh) this week, down from R91.12/MWh, while the power clearing price (PLD) also dropped to R90.07 on 12 August, from R120.13 in the previous week. Decreases during the dry season are atypical.

Authorized thermal generation for the week posted a decrease compared with the previous week's allowed dispatch. For this week, ONS estimates 3,870MW on average from thermal sources, from an average of 4,454MW in the previous week. Inflexible conditions, such as take-or-pay clauses in fuel supply agreements, still account for the entire dispatch. The drop is a result of the lack of operations authorized for the Angra 1 nuclear plant during the week.

This week, hydropower-supplying river flows are expected to rise in every region, except the northeast and north, compared with a week earlier. In the southeastern/mid-center region, where close to 70pc of Brazil's hydropower generation occurs, expected flows should rise to 79pc of the long-term average. River flows in the region reached 72pc of the long-term average last week.

Southern river flows are expected to rise to 177pc of the long-term average, after reaching 103pc last week. Northeastern river flows will drop to 67pc of the long-term average, from the previous week's 70pc, while northern river flows will decrease to 80pc from 97pc.

Water storage at hydropower reservoirs dropped across all regions last week except the south. In the southeastern/mid-center region, water impoundment was at 58.6pc of the maximum level on 12 August, from 60pc in the previous week. The region's water storage is expected to finish August at 54.4pc of the maximum level.

In the southern region, water impoundment registered at 71.9pc, slightly up from 71.7pc on the previous week, while the northeastern water storage levels were recorded at 78.2pc, down from the previous week's 80.3pc level. ONS expects the regions to reach 83.1pc and 75pc, respectively, of the maximum storage levels by the end of the month.

The northern region decreased its water impoundment to 87.2pc on 12 August, compared with 88.4pc a week earlier. It is expected to reach 89.6pc by the month's end.

ONS estimates power demand for August at 67,351MW on average, 0.5pc lower than August 2021.
