European supply of alcoholates could improve in the coming weeks, because German chemical giant BASF has lifted a one-year force majeure declaration.
The firm placed the restrictions on supply of sodium methylate, potassium methylate and crystals from its Ludwigshafen plant after a fire on 7 August 2021, and removed them on 11 August this year.
BASF is a key supplier of sodium methylate and potassium methylate, which are used as catalysts in production of biodiesel. Limited availability had forced some biodiesel producers to reduce output in the final three months of 2021, although others have managed to keep production levels unchanged. BASF has been sourcing alcoholates from the global market during the repair period and imported sodium methylate solution from its own plant in Brazil.
Some market participants said supply has normalised in recent weeks, although others are still waiting for volumes to be offered as the Ludwigshafen plant ramps up production.
