French renewables project developer Total Eren will use Australian hydrogen developer Provaris Energy's compressed hydrogen ship carriers in its hydrogen projects in Asia and Europe under an initial agreement.

The agreement provides a framework for the two to work together on an assessment of green hydrogen projects being developed by Total Eren that can use Provaris' ship carriers, known as GH2, for bulk transport of compressed hydrogen in markets that require imports of pure gaseous green hydrogen, Provaris said.

Total Eren — the renewable energy arm of TotalEnergies — is working on several large-scale green hydrogen projects, including in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Australia, Morocco, Egypt and Mauritania.

"Our discussions with Total Eren over time have identified a strong alignment on the commercial and technical benefits of compression for the storage and transport of hydrogen," Provaris managing director Martin Carolan said. "We look forward to a closer relationship to facilitate and accelerate the delivery of the first fleet of GH2 carriers."

Both Provaris and Total Eren operate green hydrogen projects in Australia's Northern Territory (NT). Provaris operates the $4.5bn-5.2bn Tiwi hydrogen project on Australia's Tiwi islands located 80km north of Darwin, the capital of the NT.

The Tiwi hydrogen project will use up to 2,800MW of solar photovoltaic to produce 100,000 t/yr of hydrogen for export at full capacity, but plans to start with an initial capacity of 50,000 t/yr.

Total Eren said last month that it plans to develop a green hydrogen hub in Darwin to produce more than 80,000 t/yr of green hydrogen.
