USWC MR tanker rates at all-time highs

Medium range (MR) clean tanker freight rates for shipments from the US west coast (USWC) have climbed to record highs over the past month amid surging regional exports and persistently high freight rates in the Asia-Pacific market.

Since 10 November, the USWC-Chile MR tanker rate has increased by 31pc to $3.45mn lump sum, or $90.79/metric tonne, and the US west coast-Rosarito rate has increased by 35pc to $1.65mn, or $43.42/t.

USWC exports of diesel, gasoline, jet fuel and naphtha hit a year-to-date monthly high of 156,000 b/d in November and so far in December have averaged 170,200 b/d, according to Vortexa data, compared with an average of 71,550 b/d in the first 10 months of this year.

The jump in USWC exports has been centered on shipments to west coast South America, as importers in the region have turned to the Pacific basin to replace imports from the US Gulf coast, which have increasingly been heading to Europe. West coast South America imports of US Gulf coast diesel, gasoline, jet fuel and naphtha fell by 116,700 b/d to 467,000 b/d from October to November, while its imports from the USWC and Asia-Pacific rose by 124,200 b/d to 164,100 b/d, according to Vortexa.

Higher refinery runs and refined product stocks on the USWC have spurred the rise in exports. Between the weeks ending 4 November and 2 December, USWC refinery utilization averaged 90.6pc, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the highest over any five-week period since September 2019. USWC gasoline stocks reached a five-month high of 30.7mn bl last week, up by 25pc since late September, while distillate fuel oil stocks reached a four-month high of 12.88mn bl, up by 21pc since early October, according to the EIA.

Moreover, high MR tanker freight rates in the Asia-Pacific market over the past six months have supported USWC rates by continually drawing open vessels positioned off the Pacific coast of the Americas, helping tighten tonnage in the region.

The South Korea-USWC MR tanker freight rate is currently at $3.425mn, or $97.86/t, up from $1.275mn, or $36.43/t, at the start of the year. The rate has averaged $3.1mn, or $88.57/t, since June, compared with a 2021 average of $1.01mn, or $28.86/t.
