VDB stresses potential of biofuels ahead of car summit

Germany's biofuels association VDB urged the country's government not to lose sight of the potential of sustainable biofuels to achieve 2030 climate targets in the transport sector ahead of the 10 January so-called car summit, which gathers participants from industry and politics to discuss climate neutrality.

VDB managing director Elmar Baumann agreed with the development of e-mobility in the country, but said the current car fleet on German roads should not be neglected. "We very much hope that the German government will achieve its goal of having 15mn electric cars (EV) on our roads by 2030. At present, however, biofuels provide almost exclusively reliable climate protection in road transport. By 2030, they will account for the largest share of emission reductions", Baumann said.

To date, around 48.5mn internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger cars are registered in Germany, which means by 2030 there will still be around 30mn ICE cars, even if the government achieves its goals regarding EVs.

But in the mid and long-term, a shift in the use of biodiesel, ethanol and biomethane to hard to electrify sectors such as heavy-duty transport or agriculture would make sense, Baumann said. "And in the future, the chemical industry can also use biofuels as a renewable raw material in order to gradually dispense with fossil raw materials," he added.

German car industry association ZDK urged the government to adopt long term and stable regulations for ramping up e-mobility. "We need reliable funding conditions in the long term and an accelerated expansion of the charging infrastructure, otherwise customer confidence will suffer", ZDK president Jurgen Karpinski said. But the association agreed with VDB by saying that because of the current car fleet on German roads and the various challenges of a green transition, the government should safeguard the principle of openness to any technologies.

Germany's chancellor Olaf Scholz will on 10 January welcome representatives of the country's car manufacturing industry and mobility sector to discuss ways to achieve climate neutrality in the transport sector and how to at the same time maintain value creation and employment in Germany.
