UK’s Greenergy may repurpose fuel terminals for LOHC

UK-based transport fuel supplier Greenergy may repurpose some of its terminals to handle liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) and has signed an agreement to jointly study the idea with German LOHC start-up Hydrogenious, the companies said today.

The pair will study the feasibility of importing hydrogen via LOHC to the UK from Canada, as Greenergy has assets in both countries. "North America will soon be a key market for large-scale clean hydrogen exports to Europe," and the UK has committed to hydrogen consumption, the companies said.

Hydrogen would be bound to the LOHC during transportation to alleviate the complexity and high cost of transporting hydrogen over long distances in its pure form. The LOHC has diesel-like properties which could allow Greenergy to continue using its existing terminal infrastructure. It is looking at adding assets for storage and separation of hydrogen that could allow it to handle 100 t/d or 36,500 t/yr of hydrogen, it said.

Fuel terminal Navigator Thames has already been identified as a strategic location to meet expected demand for hydrogen in southeast England, Greenergy said.

In the UK, Greenergy wholly owns import terminals in Cardiff and Plymouth and partly owns terminals at Teesside and on the Thames. These are used to supply transport fuels to UK customers, but demand for these may decline in future as the UK has banned the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030.

Hydrogenious has struck partnerships with other terminal operators such as Netherlands-based Evos and Vopak, which are considering converting their terminal assets to cater for rising demand for decarbonised fuels in Europe.
