Danish shipping firm AP Moller-Maersk has signed a biomethanol supply deal with Dutch supplier OCI Global for the first voyage of the world's first methanol-enabled container carrier.
The trip is estimated to span 21,500km from South Korea to Denmark, which Maersk hopes will provide operational experience for its crew in handling a methanol-powered vessel ahead of the firm's order of a new fleet of methanol-enabled tankers next year.
Maersk stated its goal of transporting a minimum of 25pc of its ocean cargo using alternative marine fuels by 2030, when compared with 2020 levels. Biomethanol barges in Rotterdam when adjusted for energy-density to a very low-sulphur fuel oil with 0.5pc sulphur equivalent (VLSFOe) averaged a $1,950/t premium to VLSFO in May — according to Argus data. The spread between biomethanol and VLSFO has significantly shrunk on the year, as biomethanol averaged $2,690/t to VLSFO in May last year.
