Danish shipping firm AP Moller-Maersk has ordered six 9,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessels.

These will run on green methanol — which it defines as methanol fuel with 65-95pc life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions compared with fossil fuels — and conventional bunker fuels.

The six will be delivered in 2026-27 and be built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group to replace existing Maersk ships. The new vessels will reduce the company's GHG emissions by about 450,000 t/yr of CO2 equivalent, said Maersk.

Argus requested comment about the percentage of methanol used in the co-firing process, as well as methanol and conventional marine fuels consumption, but had not received a reply at time of publishing.

Maersk now has 25 methanol-enabled on its order books.
