South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex supplied its first cargoes of bio-marine fuel to two vessels owned by Hyundai Merchant Marine and Hyundai Glovis during 15-16 September.

It supplied a 30pc marine biofuel blend (B30) to Hyundai Merchant Marine's container vessel the Hyundai Tacoma on 15 September and a Hyundai Glovis vessel on 16 September. Hyundai Glovis is a logistics firm affiliated with Hyundai Motor.

The Hyundai Tacoma is the first in a test navigation of container ships running on bio-marine fuels, according to the country's trade, industry and energy ministry (Motie). There are plans to launch five or more test navigations using biofuel and biodiesel by the first half of 2024.

"The data obtained through the test navigation of international container ships will be utilised in establishing bio-marine fuel quality standards and related laws, and the government will make effort to foster a favorable climate for companies to invest in eco-friendly biofuel," Motie's resources industry policy director general Yoo Beob-min said.

The fuel supplied was a mix of 30pc used cooking oil methyl ester (Ucome) and high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) blended at GS Caltex's Yeosu refinery.

The Ucome was produced by another South Korean bioenergy company DS Dansuk using UCO sourced domestically.

The firms chose a B30 blend as bio-bunkering is still on trial in South Korea, where detailed regulations have not yet been decided, GS Caltex said. B24 is the most popular bio-bunker fuel in Singapore, which has seen the most regional trials to date. This is because any bio-bunker blend above B25 incurs extra costs as the bunker barges will be considered as chemical tankers under International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations.

GS Caltex expects B24-B30 bio-marine fuels to be the most common blends for now as the IMO has allowed biofuels blend of up to B30 to be exempted from NOx measurement reporting.

The refiner said it has also been receiving inquiries from other shipping companies seeking to bunker its bio-marine fuel.

GS Caltex will also supply Korean Air with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over a six-month period starting this year.

South Korea has sought to adopt marine biofuel and SAF by 2025 and 2026 respectively, in a plan announced by the country's trade, industry and energy ministry last year.
