Raizen and Wartsila to research marine ethanol

Brazil's top sugar and ethanol milling group Raizen has partnered with Finnish engine manufacturer Wartsila Marine to research and promote ethanol fuel in shipping firms' decarbonisation plans.

Wartsila will explore ethanol as a maritime bunker fuel under its fleet decarbonisation programme, a consulting service that provides shipping firms with feasibility studies for decarbonisation. Both companies will offer advice on regulations and compliance requirements for the use of cellulosic ethanol as fuel.

In addition, Wartsila will test out the feasibility of Raizen's ethanol as a marine fuel. Ethanol has only been applied as a marine fuel in tests, but Brazil's federal administration is in talks with shipping companies and sugarcane milling companies to introduce the biofuel to the bunker fuel mix, Argus reported last week.

The marine fuel sector needs ways to decarbonise, because International Maritime Organization (IMO) members agreed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2008 levels by 20pc-30pc by 2030, by 70pc-80pc by 2040, and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
