Tight supplies limit South Korea’s 1Q sulacid exports

South Korea exported 583,400t of sulphuric acid during January-March, 5pc less than a year earlier, according to GTT data, because of production issues and a scheduled turnaround.

Sporadic production issues at LS Metals and Materials' Onsan smelter from last year's final quarter reduced export availability from South Korea, pushing buyers to source cargoes from alternative origins like Japan or China. The producer also carried out a scheduled month-long maintenance in March, further cutting production.

Spot fob South Korea/Japan prices hovered between $5-13/t fob during this year's first quarter. This provided some much needed stability to prices compared with a year earlier, as high inventories at producers pushed prices into negative territory to a low of -$9/t fob on 23 February 2023.

Shipments to India and Thailand fell by 45pc and 21pc from a year earlier to 116,000t and 88,100t respectively, while exports to Saudi Arabia also fell by 78pc to 4,800t. Shipments to Chile more than trebled from the previous year to 161,200t, with the bulk of the cargoes booked to cover annual contracts. Deliveries to mainly high-pressure acid leaching projects in Indonesia rose by 51pc to 76,800t, to supplement operating rates before the start-up of several sulphur burners.

South Korea's sulphuric acid shipments in March rose by 5pc from a year earlier to 192,700t, following a round of spot buying from Indonesia and a shutdown at a sulphur burner in Vietnam.

Exports to Indonesia in March more than trebled against last year to 39,000t, following a round of spot buying from buyers like stainless steel producer Tsingshan. Exports to Vietnam also increased by 23pc to 9,200t, with cargoes replacing lost supplies because of the closure of a sulphur burner. Exports to India and Thailand slipped by 54pc and 63pc to 37,400t and 13,900t respectively.

London, 18 June (Argus) — Moroccan state-owned fertilizer producer OCP's sulphuric acid shipments totalled 995,000t in the first half of the year, at a sharp increase from the 131,000t of acid imported in the same period last year, Argus ' latest line-up data show. And for next month, at least 100,000t is estimated to discharge at Jorf Lasfar until the third week of July. The sharp increase on first half of the year is due to increased demand for sulphuric acid owing to strong phosphate prices, but also as new sulphur burner capacity came on line later in the second quarter. OCP bought heavily from Europe in the first half of the year, sourcing about 80pc of its requirement from producers in the region. But in the last month the supplier had to enter the Asian market to secure acid cargoes owing to limited uncommitted availability from European suppliers as key smelters undergo scheduled maintenance. OCP's buying in Asia resulted in Chinese fobs rising to by 30pc on the week to $32.50/t cfr on 14 June, the highest level recorded since November last year. Argus has confirmed six vessels sold to OCP in mid-to-late May for delivery during the second half of the year. Further buying was evidenced in June, when OCP purchased at least three more cargoes from Asian suppliers, either directly from producers or via a trader. The continued appetite from the fertilizer buyer comes amid firm phosphate prices as India's kharif season is under way. Argus' DAP index — a volume-weighted basket of DAP prices from the top-five export markets — has been trending upwards since mid-to late May, reaching 156 points on 14 June. Porto Alegre, Brazil partially reopens post-flood

Sao Paulo, 17 June (Argus) — The Porto Alegre port, in Brazil's flood-hit southern Rio Grande do Sul state, partially resumed operations last week while other area ports continue to recover. Activities had been suspended at Porto Alegre since 2 May, following the unprecedented floods that hit the state in late April and May, but there was a partial reopening on 14 June. Porto Alegre is still carrying out cleaning and maintenance, and port authority Portos RS is still analyzing damage to infrastructure. The first operation will take place at the POA02 terminal, leased by logistic firm Serra Morena. The 60,456 dwt bulk carrier Nord Mississipi will be unloading inputs for fertilizer production. Porto Alegre is one of three ports in Rio Grande do Sul, along with Pelotas and Rio Grande. Pelotas was also hit by the floods but resumed operations on 21 May. The port of Rio Grande did not suspend operations but has had to reduce the draft of ships allowed in to port because of debris and sediment left by the flooding. The draft at the Bunge, Bianchini and Termasa/Tergrasa terminals was reduced to 12.8 meters (42ft) on 21 May and is now 11.9m. Rio Grande do Sul is once again on alert because of the forecast of new rains in the state over the next few days. AW Shipping’s VLACs join newbuild order book

Singapore, 12 June (Argus) — AW Shipping, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi's state-owned Adnoc and Chinese petrochemical producer Wanhua Chemical, has ordered up to four Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) newbuilds. AW Shipping ordered up to four 93,000m³ VLACs from China's Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The deal was for two firm and two optional VLACs, with prices estimated at around $120mn each, according to sales and purchase and newbuild vessel sources. AW Shipping has yet to respond to Argus to confirm the prices. It added five very large gas carriers to its fleet at the end of last year. The 86,000m³ newbuilds — Al Ain , Zakher , Rabdan , Al Salam and Baynounah — were built by Jiangnan and are equipped with dual-fuel engines that can run on LPG, which will be used as the primary fuel, as well as standard bunker fuels, the company said. Ammonia carrier demand is increasing as it gains traction in the energy and agricultural sectors and plays a part in decarbonisation efforts. It is becoming more popular because of its low-carbon qualities, which make it a desirable option for use in power plants and as an alternative fuel in the maritime sector. Ammonia is also extensively used in the production of fertilizer. But development of a VLAC market could be delayed by a lack of terminal infrastructure to allow discharge of 40,000-60,000t cargoes, said Steem1960 ammonia shipbroker Lisa Maria Assmann at the Argus Clean Ammonia conference in Tokyo in May. Around 40 VLACs are scheduled to hit the water between 2026-28, when an uptake in clean ammonia trade is likely to be pushed by public tenders from South Korea and Japan. "VLACs cannot discharge these large volumes using the existing infrastructure," Assmann said. "We have storages that are much smaller than that, terminals with draft issues, LOA (length overall) issues. With all these problems, I do not see these large volumes being discharged in a speedy manner in the short term, not before 2035-40 at least." Canada makes 3 additions to critical minerals list

Houston, 10 June (Argus) — High-purity iron, phosphorus, and silicon metal were added by the Canadian government to the country's critical minerals list. In an analysis of the 2021 list and possible additions, the update kept all 31 minerals from the original list and added high-purity iron, phosphorous, and silicon metal. High-purity iron ore is used in "green" or low-carbon steel. Phosphorus is a fertilizer and can also be used in Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. Silicon metal is used to manufacture chips and semiconductors. Canada reviews minerals recognized as critical every three years with its first list published in 2021. The list is intended to guide public policy and signal government priorities, according to the government.
