Philippines interested in supply from US' Alaska LNG

The Philippines is the latest Asian country to express interest in the planned 20mn t/yr Alaska LNG project following a meeting with Alaska governor Mike Dunleavy.

"We plan to procure LNG from Alaska to meet our growing needs to develop our energy sector", Philippine ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romuladez said on Friday.

The Philippines joins Japan and Taiwan in expressing interest in the Alaska LNG project, probably to appease US president Donald Trump's ongoing concern regarding the US' trade deficit with trade partners.

LNG imports totalled around 1.2mn t in 2024, which is double the 600,000t imported in 2023, according to data from ship tracking firm Kpler. But demand is likely to increase because of the Philippines' planned pivot to gas for power generation despite facing declining domestic gas production.

The country is already projected to import around 340,000t of LNG by the end of February, Kpler data show. If the Philippines continues to import LNG at these rates, it would imply an annual import figure of around 2mn t, a 67pc increase from 2024 figures.

US LNG only accounted for around 5pc of Philippines' imports in 2024, whereas Australia, the largest supplier, accounted for around 37pc, according to data from Kpler.

A cargo from Alaska LNG would only require 13 days of transit to the Philippines, compared with around 35 days from the US Gulf via the Cape of Good Hope, assuming an average speed of 17 knots.
