Australian metals producer South32 exceeded its copper, zinc, manganese and nickel production targets in the 2024-25 financial year to 30 June, despite facing weather and maintenance disruptions.

But the company's zinc, nickel, and manganese output fell on the year in the 2024-25 financial year, and may fall in again in the 2025-26 financial year. South32 will sell its Cerro Matoso nickel mine and may update its Cannington zinc mine plan over the year, it said in a quarterly report on 21 July.

Nickel

South32 produces nickel products including ferronickel at its Cerro Matoso mine in Colombia. Production at the site reached 37,100t in 2024-25, down by 9pc on the year but above its target of 35,000t (see table).

The company cut production at Cerro Matoso because of low nickel ore grades, but exceeded its guidance because of increased processing.

It agreed to sell the plant to global conglomerate Corex in early July because of pricing challenges. The deal set to close by the end of 2025.

South32's nickel guidance of 16,000t for the 2025-26 financial year only accounts for production in July-December 2025.

Manganese

South32 produces manganese at its mines in Australia and South Africa. It mined 3.3mn t of manganese over the year, down by 28pc on the year, but above its target of 3mn t.

Tropical Cyclone Megan damaged South32's Gemco mine in March 2024. The company closed the mine for four months. It later halted production at the site over January-March 2025 to finish mine dewatering work, which weighed on output.

South32 will ramp up production at the 6mn t/yr site to capacity over the 2025-26 financial year.

South32 expects to produce 3.2mn t of manganese at Gemco in the 2025-26 financial year, up from the 1.1mn t produced a year earlier.

Production at South32's South African manganese operations fell by a more modest 1pc on the year to 2.2mn t in the 2024-25 financial year. The decline stemmed from a planned maintenance shutdown in January-March.

But South32 exceeded its production target of 2mn t by 8pc. The company has rolled over its production target for the 2025-26 financial year.

Zinc

South32 produced 241,900t of payable zinc at its Cannington mine in 2024-25, down by 20pc on the year and just above its target of 239,200t.

Production at the mine fell because of declining ore grades, weather challenges and complex conditions in its underground section.

South32 is currently assessing Cannington's mine plan and will announcement a production target for the 2025-26 financial year in its 2024-25 financial results.

Copper

South32 produced 88,100t of copper at its Sierra Gorda mine in Chile in the 2024-25 financial year, up by 20pc on the year and above its target of 84,800t.

The company boosted production at the mine because of increased copper ore grades and recovery rates. It plans to produce 84,700t of copper in the 2025-26 financial year, as it expects ore grades to remain high.
