Jet Zero plants pongamia to test biofuel potential

Australian bioenergy developer Jet Zero has planted 10 hectares (ha) of the native Australian oilseed pongamia in Queensland to prove the potential biofuel feedstock can grow in semi-arid environments.

The pongamia seed plantation is about 170km southwest of Townsville. The seed produces a high yield of non-edible oil and can grow in regions affected by salinity and drought, avoiding common biofuel industry concerns of deforestation, food versus fuel issues and habitat loss, according to Jet Zero.

Pongamia has the potential to produce oilseed cake for livestock feed and oil for sustainable aviation fuel projects, such as Ampol and Graincorp's 720,000 t/yr SAF project, which will utilise the hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathway.

Pongamia has an oil yield slightly lower than that of palm oil, which has the highest oil yield per hectare and can also produce six times more oil per hectare than canola and soybean oil, Jet Zero said.

Other pongamia projects in Queensland include a 3,000ha (30km²) project by Rio Tinto near Townsville and a trial by Idemitsu and Terviva at Stanmore's South Walker Creek mine.
