Australia's GrainCorp workers strike at Newcastle port

Union members working for Australian bulk handler GrainCorp are striking at the company's Carrington grain terminal in Newcastle, New South Wales (NSW), which could slow loading at the port this week.

Union members of the Electrical Trades Union and Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) announced a 72-hour work stoppage this week in response to souring negotiations around pay and employment conditions. The industrial action started on the morning of 23 September and will continue until 26 September if employees do not end the industrial action early.

The strike may slow down some loading vessels at the port, including the Star Illusion, which was expected to depart on 26 September with 55,000t of wheat, according to GrainCorp. GrainCorp told Argus the loading of one vessel at the port was still underway despite the strikes.

"Unless management comes to the table with a serious offer, workers stand ready to escalate", the MUA said in a statement on 22 September.

A significant escalation or extended strikes could disrupt exports in the new marketing year beginning October, a critical window for when southern hemisphere crops typically price competitively against northern hemisphere crops that were harvested earlier.

The MUA has not yet responded to a request for comment.
