2025 already a record for LNG carrier scrappage: Flex

The number of LNG carriers being scrapped has reached a "record" high so far in 2025, Norwegian shipping firm Flex LNG said in its third-quarter earnings call, with vessel retirements likely to continue at pace in the coming years as ship operators prepare for a wave of newbuild deliveries.

Some 14 LNG carriers were scrapped in the first nine months of 2025, Flex said, up from eight in the whole of 2024 and an average of five over 2020-24. The vessels scrapped in 2025 were an average age of 26 years, which is the lowest since at least 2020.

Flex expects a "wave of further retirements" over the next few years, given that 30 vessels in the global fleet are already over 25 years old and a further 45 over 20 years. Around 120 steam turbine vessels are either open or under charter agreements that are set to end in the next few years, Flex added. There is little demand for steam turbine vessels at present, which the firms said is likely to encourage shipowners to scrap their vessels rather than paying for a dry dock.

Some 18 newbuild LNG carriers were ordered over January-September 2025, Flex said, down from 76 orders in the whole of 2024. Newbuild orders are to date the lowest since at least 2020, even excluding the vessels ordered by state-owned QatarEnergy over 2021-24.

The global LNG fleet is set to grow most in 2026 and 2027, with a "considerable" number of vessels previously scheduled for 2025 delivery now delayed until 2026, Flex said. Less than 30 of the 287 LNG vessels on order are open, as the vast majority of newbuilds are linked to QatarEnergy's expansion project or other terminals. Long-term charter rates in 2025 are lower than in previous years, which is likely to have discouraged speculative orders, market participants said.
