US electric vehicle maker Rivian has expanded its partnership with battery recycler Redwood Materials to include production scrap, end-of-life battery packs and energy storage systems (ESS) at its plant in Normal, Illinois.

Redwood will collect battery packs that are no longer suitable for vehicle use through Rivian's US service center network. It will test each pack and either repurpose it for ESS at Rivian sites or elsewhere, or recycle it. Redwood will also recycle scrap from Rivian's manufacturing operations. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The expanded partnership builds on an agreement announced in April to install 10 MWh of ESS made from repurposed Rivian battery packs at the Normal plant, which produced 19,751 vehicles in the third quarter.

Redwood said its process can recover more than 95pc of the lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper in spent batteries. The company produces these metals and cathode active material in the US, and also deploys storage systems for data centers and the grid.
